Education is very important. This is the only wealth in the world that cannot be stolen. Education also helps ensure the security of your future. However, quality education does not come cheap. Higher level of education does not come cheap. Due to the steep prices of education, many young individuals have chosen not to pursue a career or not to pursue college. What made it harder to pursue quality education is the fact that the economic recession has left many parents jobless. Since they have no work, they cannot afford to send their children to college no matter how bright and intelligent they are.

Most students choose not go to college for financial reasons. However, this does not mean that the government is doing nothing to help these students. In fact, the government is giving out grants, which can be used by qualified individuals to pursue a college education. Grants are not like loans because you do not have to repay this when you graduate. One of the most popular grants for students is the pell grant.

Students who are misinformed often think that a Pell Grant is like a student loan, wherein you take out a certain amount and you pay it after. What they do not know is that Pell Grant is not a loan at all. In fact, it is not even close to a loan. A Pell Grant is actually a form of financial aid for students who cannot afford to go to college, but are eligible. Moreover, the grant aid is handed to the student and not the school, which gives the student the freedom to choose which school to attend.

However, just because you are a student who cannot afford to go to school does not mean you are automatically eligible for a Pell Grant. Keep in mind that there are certain conditions for the Pell Grant eligibility that a prospective candidate has to meet.

For a prospective candidate to become eligible for a Pell Grant, he or she must have the following:

·         The right citizenship which means he or she should be any of the following:

o   US permanent citizen

o   A citizen of the Freely Associated States, which are the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republics of Palau and the Marshall Islands

For a candidate who lives in the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republics of Palau and the Marshall Islands, they may not provide a social security number. Instead, they can apply online and an ID# will be provided to them. This ID# can be entered as a social security number.

·         If the candidate is between 18-25 he will have to register with the Selective Service System. However, exceptions can apply. Read more about Pell Grant eligibility to know more about these exceptions in terms of the Selective Service System.
